Merv Moore is building a coaching staff. Not in Toronto. Not in Vancouver. In Bohol, Philippines \u2014 a tropical island province in the Visayas where the cost of living is low, the weather is warm year-round, and a baseball and softball club called the Bohol Coconuts is assembling something that does not yet exist anywhere else in Southeast Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Moore, the Sports Director of the Bohol Coconuts Baseball and Softball Club, is recruiting an international coaching staff \u2014 coaches from Canada, the United States, Japan, and Korea \u2014 to help build what he envisions as an elite baseball and softball academy in one of the most beautiful and affordable places in the world to live.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I’m looking for coaches who still have something to give the game,” Moore said. “Retired or semi-retired coaches from Canada and the U.S. who have spent decades building programs and developing players \u2014 and who are not remotely interested in stopping.”<\/span><\/p>\n

If that sounds like you, Moore is already waiting.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why Bohol, Why Now<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Moore’s vision goes beyond a community recreational league. He is building toward a legitimate international academy model, one that attracts youth players and partner organizations from across Asia and North America.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Asian market, Moore believes, is the key.<\/span><\/p>\n

“American companies are focused on youth sports organizations in their own backyards,” Moore said. “I’ve chatted with dozens of American companies who love what we are doing, but they prioritize requests from American youth teams and leagues.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Japanese and Korean tourism to Bohol Island is already substantial. Moore sees that as the foundation for something bigger \u2014 a baseball and softball academy that Japanese and Korean families, clubs, and sports organizations would travel to specifically because of what it offers.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I think that an international staff with coaches from North America and Asia will benefit our kids,” Moore said. “Each coach will bring different ideas and training methods, and this diversity will help us develop elite teenage prospects.”<\/span><\/p>\n

An academy with Canadian and American coaching expertise, combined with Japanese and Korean coaching methodology, is a genuinely compelling proposition in the Asian sports market \u2014 and Moore knows it.<\/span><\/p>\n

What Canada and the U.S. Are Losing<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Every year, experienced amateur and youth baseball and softball coaches in Canada and the United States step away from the game \u2014 not because they are finished, but because the structure of North American minor sports simply has no further use for them.<\/span><\/p>\n

These are coaches who spent decades in the system. Certified. Experienced. Program builders. The kind of coaches who ran tryouts, managed parents, taught fundamentals, and developed players who went on to play at higher levels.<\/span><\/p>\n

They retire with knowledge that is difficult to replace and almost impossible to replicate quickly. And then, largely, that knowledge sits.<\/span><\/p>\n

Moore wants it in Bohol.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The coaches I’m looking for have already proved themselves in Canada or the U.S.,” he said. “I don’t need to convince them that they know baseball or softball. I need to convince them that there’s a place worth bringing that knowledge to. Bohol is that place.”<\/span><\/p>\n
