Get ready to transform ordinary cardboard into extraordinary seating! This exciting competition challenges participants to design and build fully functional chairs using only cardboard, glue, and tape, proving that creativity and engineering principles can turn everyday materials into remarkable creations.

EVENT DETAILS

Date: March 21, 2026 (Third Saturday)
Time: 3:00 PM – 5:30 PM
Location: Cambanac
Age Group: 8-18 years old (divided into AA, AAA, Jr., and Sr. categories)

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Registration Opens: February 1, 2026
Registration Deadline: March 14, 2026 (one week before contest)
Entry Fee: ₱50 for non-members | FREE for Bohol Coconuts members

OFFICIAL CONTEST RULES

Materials Allowed

  • Cardboard ONLY (any type: corrugated, chipboard, cardboard boxes, etc.)
  • PVA (White) School Glue or similar non-toxic adhesive
  • Clear or Masking Tape (no duct tape, packing tape, or specialty adhesives)
  • Cutting tools for construction (but no tools allowed during testing)

Materials PROHIBITED

  • Wood, plastic, metal, or any non-cardboard reinforcements
  • Hot glue, super glue, epoxy, or industrial adhesives
  • Paint, decorative elements, or non-structural additions
  • Pre-manufactured furniture parts or components
  • Fabric, foam, rubber, or cushioning materials

Chair Requirements

  • Must be free-standing without external support
  • Must have a proper seat, backrest, and structural integrity
  • Must accommodate a standard load-testing form (25cm × 25cm platform)
  • Must be large enough to support weight at standard chair height (minimum 30cm seat height)
  • No dimension restrictions, but chairs exceeding 70cm × 70cm × 70cm may be difficult to transport

Testing Procedure

  • All chairs will undergo visual inspection before testing
  • Each chair will be placed on a level testing surface
  • Weight testing will begin with 20kg and increase incrementally
  • Chairs will be tested until structural failure (collapse) or until reaching maximum test weight of 100kg
  • The chair’s performance score will be determined by weight held ÷ chair weight

JUDGING CRITERIA

  • Structural Integrity (40%): Maximum weight supported before failure
  • Efficiency (30%): Weight-to-strength ratio (lighter chairs that hold more weight score higher)
  • Design Innovation (20%): Creative use of cardboard materials and construction techniques
  • Craftsmanship (10%): Attention to detail and finish quality

PRIZES

The Bohol Coconuts is proud to recognize excellence at every level, with prizes awarded for the top ten finishers in each age category.

SAFETY GUIDELINES

  • Adult supervision required during construction phase
  • Proper tools must be used for cutting cardboard (no box cutters for participants under 12)
  • Face masks recommended when cutting cardboard edges
  • All chairs must pass safety inspection before weight testing
  • No participants will sit in their own chairs during testing (standardized weight testing only)

To help participants succeed, the Bohol Coconuts will host a free workshop on:

This session will cover basic structural principles, folding techniques, and joinery methods specifically for cardboard construction. Materials will be provided for practice models.

WHAT TO BRING ON CONTEST DAY

  • Your completed cardboard chair
  • Your registration receipt
  • Any personal tools needed for last-minute adjustments (scissors, rulers, etc.)
