At the Bohol Coconuts Baseball & Softball Club, we believe greatness starts with a solid foundation. Our Rookie League (Ages 4-5) and Single A League (Ages 6-7) are the cornerstones of our player development pyramid.

These two divisions will train together under the watchful eye of our Head Coach, Marvin “Merv” Moore, who brings over 30 years of coaching experience to our youngest athletes. He has a special vision for this group.

“The Class of 2026—our four to seven-year-olds—is where I see our future stars,” beamed Coach Merv from Texas.

By focusing intensely on fundamentals in a fun, positive environment, the club’s youngest kids will have six full years of accelerated, year-round training by the time they are 10 to 13 years-old.

The Coconuts Way: Every child, from the newest Rookie to the advancing Single A player, learns the same core fundamentals. This consistent, progressive curriculum ensures that skills are built upon year after year, creating technically sound and confident ballplayers.

Hitting

Former Therwil Flyers and Swiss National Team slugger Andreas Mathis was the best pure hitter that Coach Merv Moore worked with during his six seasons in Switzerland.

The swing is the engine of the game. We start with the basics and build a repeatable, powerful motion.

Stance & Balance: Learning the proper athletic posture at the plate.

Grip: How to hold the bat correctly for control and power.

Tee Work: Mastering swing mechanics by hitting a stationary ball from a batting tee, focusing on contact point and a level swing path.

Coach Pitch: Transitioning to hitting a gently lobbed ball, developing timing and hand-eye coordination.

Goal: To make solid, consistent contact and understand the objective of hitting the ball hard into play.

Fielding

Defense wins games. We teach kids to be confident and ready for any ball hit their way.

Ready Position: The foundational athletic stance used to prepare for any batted ball.

Ground Balls: Using “alligator hands” to secure the ball in front of the body, followed by a clean transfer to the throwing hand.

Fly Balls (Introductory): Tracking the ball with eyes and learning basic catching technique with two hands.

Footwork: Moving efficiently to get the body in front of the baseball.

Goal: To field the ball cleanly and be prepared to make a throw.

Throwing

A strong, accurate arm is a critical skill. We break down the throwing motion into easy-to-learn steps.

Four-Step Progression: Grip (seams), Arm Action (making a “goodbye” and “hello” motion), Footwork (step toward target), and Follow-Through.

Accuracy Over Distance: Learning to throw straight to a target before adding power.

Goal: To develop a proper, safe throwing motion that builds arm strength and accuracy over time.

Baserunning

Speed and smart aggression on the bases are game-changers.

Running Through First Base: Learning to sprint straight through the bag without slowing.

Basepath Awareness: Understanding the direction to run and the location of bases.

Listening to Coaches: Following base coach instructions for when to run and when to stop.

Goal: To run hard, smart, and with confidence every time the ball is hit.

Team Defense

Baseball is a team game. We introduce basic concepts of working together.

Positions & Responsibilities: Learning the names of positions and where to stand.

Backing Up Plays: Understanding that every play has a backup player.

Communication: Using simple words like “I got it!” or “Ball! Ball! Ball!”.

Goal: To understand that nine players work as one unit on the field.

Division-Specific Curriculum & Goals

Rookie League (Ages 4-5) – “Learn, Laugh, Love the Game”

Focus: Introduction to all basic skills in a high-energy, fun-focused, T-ball style environment. We use soft baseballs for safety and confidence.

Method: Primarily Batting Tee, with introduction to Coach Pitch in our upcoming Wiffle Ball League to begin developing timing.

2026 Goal: Develop comfort with a bat, glove, and ball. Foster a positive association with teamwork and physical activity.

Single A League (Ages 6-7) – “Building the Foundation”

Focus: Development and repetition of core fundamentals. Introduction to simple game situations (e.g., where to throw the ball).

Method: Primarily Coach Pitch. By removing player pitching, we allow kids to focus entirely on their own hitting mechanics and defensive throwing fundamentals without the variability of wild pitches.

2026 Goal: Master the basic fundamental actions of throwing, catching, hitting off coach pitch, and baserunning. Build baseball IQ through simple game scenarios.
