Moore or Less: Why I Love Being A Baseball GM

By Merv Moore
Sports Director & Head Baseball Coach

When people ask me what’s the difference between the crisp Alpine fields of Switzerland and the diamonds of Bohol, I tell them this: being a General Manager here isn’t just a job—it’s a calling.

And it’s more thrilling than anything I’ve ever done, including steering the largest baseball and softball club in Switzerland in the ’90s and helping turn one of Europe’s worst national teams into a B-Pool contender.

Don’t get me wrong—my time with the Therwil Flyers was unforgettable.

My time in Switzerland in the 1990s was about introducing a new sport overseas. I fell in love with the development process and the goal was to help the game grow in a country dominated by soccer.

But here in Bohol? It’s different. There are no limitations here.

We can practice daily. We have hungry players who want a better life for themselves and their families. We have kids who were born to be baseball players… not soccer players. And I truly believe Filipino kids can compete with Japanese, Korean, and Taiwanese players—with the right training.

Asia is a hotbed of teenage baseball talent. Scouts know it. The world is starting to see it. But the Philippines remains an untapped market, a sleeping giant of young prospects just waiting for a real system to discover them.

And that’s what gets me out of bed every morning.

I love scouting. I love watching a tall kid with a fluid throwing motion and dreaming of him on a mound in front of scouts. I love seeing small kids with incredible foot and hand quickness and knowing they could be elite infielders. That spark in their eyes when they connect with a pitch—that’s my fuel.

Now, with our new affiliate clubs launching across all 17 barangays in Baclayon, we’re going to see more of those kids than ever.

We’re building a true farm system, and our 10-year plan is centered on what I call the “Class of 2026”—the kids aged 4 to 9 right now. These are the boys who will grow up in our system, move through Rookie League, Single-A, Double-A, and beyond, and by 2036, be the first homegrown Boholano prospects ready for the international stage.

That’s the dream. But it’s not just about creating elite prospects.

It’s about giving boys and girls a path to uplift their families. It’s about turning baseball into an opportunity—for education, for discipline, for hope.

That’s why every affiliate club will have a soup kitchen and a mini food store. That’s why we’ll run academic contests and field trips. We’re not just building athletes; we’re building futures.

And the heart of that future is our Coconuts All-Star Baseball Program.

I love getting the best players together and letting them compete against each other. We’re building something special. We’re going to build a pipeline of minor league baseball prospects by having an island filled with well-organized baseball academies.

If you’ve ever dreamed of being a Baseball GM—of shaping young talent, of building something from the ground up, of leaving a legacy in a community—this is your chance.

Our franchise model isn’t just about running a baseball academy; it’s about becoming part of a movement. You’ll scout, you’ll train, you’ll mentor, and you’ll watch kids grow in ways you never thought possible.

And starting March 1st, you can follow every step of our journey on our YouTube reality series, “Building the Coconuts.” It’s a 24/7 documentary on our early days—the struggles, the triumphs, the raw reality of creating something great from nothing. I’m excited for you to see it. I’m even more excited for you to join us.

The field is waiting. The kids are ready. The game is growing.
