Weathering the Storm: Coconuts’ Garden Program Stands Strong

Tropical Storm Basyang delivered a powerful test to Bohol last night, with heavy rains and high winds sweeping across the island. In Cambanac, the storm’s force was visible as a coconut tree was knocked down, blocking a road that required immediate clearing. As a precaution against possible flooding, numerous residents were evacuated to the safety of the Barangay Hall.

Amidst the disruption, a beacon of local resilience emerged unscathed: the backyard gardens of the Bohol Coconuts Agricultural Partnerships program. Despite the severe weather, none of the vegetable gardens were damaged.

This community initiative partners with local residents who grow vegetables at home, which are then purchased by the Coconuts to create fresh, hyper-local meals for its Soup Kitchen.

“We are incredibly relieved and grateful,” said club general manager Lerma Moore. “The durability of these gardens is a testament to the care and dedication of our partner growers.”

The successful weathering of the storm highlights the strength of the program and the community it supports. It underscores how deeply rooted, small-scale agriculture can demonstrate remarkable resilience.

The Coconuts organization extends its gratitude to all barangay officials who ensured community safety and cleared the storm’s damage. The club reaffirms its commitment to these agricultural partnerships, which continue to nourish both the community and its team spirit.
